From the Streets to a Path of Recovery

Voices of Hope is a heartfelt project by Maria’s Birthday Wishes for the Homeless (MBWFTH), sharing the real-life stories of men and women who have experienced homelessness, addiction, hardship, and loss.

Through these personal journeys, we hope to remind others that every individual has a story, every life has value, and recovery is possible when hope, compassion, and support are extended.

For this page, we would like to feature Erick’s story, highlighting his journey from life on the streets to finding hope, healing, and a new beginning through recovery.

Our goal is to inspire understanding instead of judgment, encourage compassion, and remind our community that no one should ever be defined by their worst chapter. Every person deserves the opportunity to write a new one.

Erick’s Story – From the Streets to a Path of Recovery

My name is Erick, and for much of my life I struggled with addiction.

What began with marijuana eventually escalated into opioid addiction after I was injured in a work accident during the era of the pill mills. At that time, I was in school pursuing a career in nursing. I had a home, a loving wife, and five children. Life felt full of promise and possibility.

Everything changed in 2010.

A woman lost control of her vehicle and drove through our front yard, striking our children as they played. One of my daughters was killed. Another daughter was critically injured, and the little girl next door lost all of her teeth. My son witnessed the entire tragedy.

I didn’t know how to survive that kind of pain.

I turned to drugs to numb the grief, and my addiction quickly spiraled out of control. I lost my marriage, my children, my home, my education, my career, and eventually my freedom. I was sentenced to five years in prison for burglary.

When I was released, I returned to drugs. Methamphetamine took over my life, and I began hearing voices. Fear and delusion consumed me completely.

For nearly seven years, I lived homeless, hiding deep in the woods and swamps of Florida, avoiding human contact as much as possible. I survived in unimaginable conditions—collecting water by kayak, living in constant darkness, surrounded by alligators and despair.

Eventually, I reached a breaking point.

I surrendered my life to God and entered the recovery program at St. Matthew’s House.

While there, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Although I had been diagnosed with acute schizophrenia, something began to shift within me. The voices that had tormented me for years began to lose their power.

Several months later, a staff member prayed over me and performed what I believe was a spiritual cleansing. From that day forward, the voices disappeared completely.

Today, after 11 months in the recovery program, I work at St. Matthew’s House, helping others who are walking the same difficult road I once traveled.

I want others to know that no matter how broken life may seem, there is always hope. Recovery is possible, and every new day is an opportunity for a new beginning.

At the end of the interview, I held his hand. His eyes filled with tears. I told him, “We are with you. We believe in you. God is on your side and is guiding your steps.”
